SunSmart Position Statement
Queensland is not just a beautiful state to live in with our sunshine and pristine beaches, it also has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Of all cancers diagnosed in Australia each year, 80% are skin cancer. These alarming facts have made the SunSmart policy from the Cancer Council part of our College requirements. Protecting the children in our care from prolonged and harmful UV exposure and educating them about sun safety is very important to us as our students do engage in outdoor activities and sporting programs. We acknowledge that some UV exposure for vitamin D is important for healthy bones and muscles and therefore being outside is part of our College life. During these times all students and staff are required to wear hats, and sunscreen is provided in each classroom for use.
